A lot of these "rugged individualists" are attempting deliberately to overthrow the social contract out of their inflated delusions of adequacy, in the belief that they will do as well against Nature as they have done out of their various privileges. They will have a surprise.

We have forgotten what it was like to get a bacterial infection in the remarkably brief time that we have been free of them: They were a death sentence. One slip with a sharp tool and you could be facing amputation and/or death within days. As recently as the First World War untold thousands of healthy, young men died of unstoppable infections due to relatively trivial wounds. Pretty soon now, antibiotics may become useless even without pitching nations into chaos. It needs a whole global society to stay as comfortable as we currently live.
