As a Swiss citizen, I would say that you should not underestimate the extent to which Switzerland and Norway are de facto EU members. Switzerland is in the Schengen space and has individual treaties covering most of the provisions of membership. It adheres to EU law in most respects. All that is missing is a vote on EU laws.
We are neutral by international treaty and that has brought the country a lot of benefits, as well as being useful for others. As such, we may never join, but it is a little misleading to show us as a hole in the middle. Generally, you could wander across the border and never notice.
