I might add that in many more limited applications ANN-based AIs are already matching and often far outperforming human beings. The writing was already on the wall with Deep Blue. It has taken a little longer to get this far than I would have forecast, but the rate of advance is now explosive.

Interestingly, a similar process of exponentiation is visible in genetic science. The next pandemic may have a vaccine before it reaches the lockdown stage. Vaccines tailored for individual cancers may be affordable for ordinary individuals in the lifetime of those of us here. If we don't terminally screw up the environment these technologies are going to alter the lives of everyone.
