I think you may turn out to be wrong about the EU. I think and hope that it may gain momentum out of current events.

Europe has achieved huge peacetime success under the umbrella of US support for NATO, but at the expense of military independence. It would achieve two useful goals if Europe were now to start paying for, and therefore also steering, its own military upkeep. As a European I am grateful for the US umbrella, but also acutely aware that we have sacrificed our independence, been involved in several unnecessary US wars and made ourselves dependent on someone else's money. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

I think Europe can and should now rectify these imbalances. Europe has an economic power comparable to that of the USA. It should wield this power according to its own interests and at its own expense.
